Direct hire ALT jobs

We have now moved into the season where Boards of Education are looking to fill ALT positions starting in April 2010.

I have not been posting regularly on this blog recently but I am going to work to make this site a useful resource for current and prospective ALTs.

It is ironic that I have a website that aims to help people find direct hire ALT positions while I found out a couple of weeks ago that my job is being transferred to an agency! My BoE told me I'm a great ALT (this is true) and that they'd like me to continue as an ALT and become an agency employee, meaning my pay will be reduced by about 100,000 yen per month. I wish I knew how to say "actions speak louder than words" in Japanese.

However I am not sure if I really want to continue being an ALT. Part of the reason I have stayed in my current job for so long is the golden handcuffs that the salary represented. I may take this opportunity to try my had at managing my own language school. I dabbled with this for a year after my first year of ALTing without too much success. I was working too many inconvenient hours. If I have another go I have decided that I shall be more successful in teaching at times that are suitable to me.

In the meantime I am continuing to gather information and keep the ALT Directory subscribers informed of vacancies that I find out about.
